How to read nutritional panels!
A very quick guide!
Attached is a picture of Weetbix! (Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie!)
That's a lot of info! To keep it simples - for what we're after at this moment, lets just focus on:
12.4g protein
and 0.3g saturated fat
3.3g sugar
I got these numbers from the "per 100g" part of the nutritional panel - this makes it easy to compare because all serving sizes are different, and also this is effectively a percentage of what you're eating :)
Lets compare it to say... Cornflakes!
7.8g protein
and 0.1g fat
7.9g sugar
So in other words it has significantly less protein, a negligible difference in saturated fat, and more than twice the sugar! All of this is before you even put on your toppings :)
This is a really simplified way to look at the nutritional panel - but if you're happy with the amount of macronutrients you're getting in. (That’s the swanky name for Protein Carbs and Fat!) then start looking at the ingredients! As a general rule, if you don’t understand what’s in the ingredients, it probably has too many chemicals in it :) The more chemicals, the harder your body has to work to process them, when it really could be putting that energy to better use ;)
